12/09/2006 - Durham, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The seventh-ranked Duke Blue Devils welcome the George Mason Patriots to Durham for a non-conference clash this afternoon.
George Mason made an improbable run to the 2006 Final Four, but several key contributors from that squad are gone. As a result, the Patriots are 4-3 this season and have yet to string together back-to-back victories. On Wednesday, Radford was the opponent, and the result of that contest was a closer-than-expected, 62-60 victory for George Mason.
Duke also lost its best players from a year ago, but the team has still won eight of its first nine games this season. On Wednesday, strong defense was key to a 57-45 triumph over Holy Cross that enabled the Blue Devils to move to 7-0 at home, and they have now limited the opposition to 56 or fewer points in all but two games.
Duke owns a 2-0 series edge over George Mason, but the teams haven't met since 1983.
George Mason struggled at the offensive end against Radford on Wednesday, as the team turned the ball over 19 times and shot a lowly 36.8 percent from the floor, including 5-of-16 from three-point range. If not for a 15-10 edge in points from the foul line and a 41-29 rebounding advantage, including 19-10 on the offensive glass, the Patriots would have endured an upset. Folarin Campbell finished with 21 points and six assists for George Mason on the strength of a 10-of-11 showing from the charity stripe. John Vaughan also had 21 points off the bench, and Will Thomas contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds. Campbell is scoring a team-high 16.3 ppg on 39.6 percent shooting from the field, and Vaughan adds 14.7 ppg to the mix. Will Thomas is posting 13.3 ppg, and his 7.1 rpg lead the team. The Patriots are only scoring 62.9 ppg thus far, but they are limiting opponents to 58.4 ppg.
On Wednesday, Duke connected on only 32 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half and trailed Holy Cross by six points at intermission. Over the final 20 minutes, the Blue Devils were much more impressive at the offensive end, as they were able to nail 61.1 percent of their shots from the floor, and they also limited the Crusaders to 29.2 percent overall shooting in the second half. A 34-24 rebounding advantage certainly played a role in the win for Duke, and the margin of victory would have been greater if not for 20 turnovers and a 13-of-27 effort from the foul line. Josh McRoberts and DeMarcus Nelson scored 13 points apiece in the triumph. McRoberts entered the game against Holy Cross averaging 11.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 4.0 apg and 2.4 bpg, proof of his tremendous versatility. There is not a single senior on the Duke roster, and this young team figures to improve each time on the floor.
